NICET re-certification 90 CPD
Posted on May 14, 2011 by admin
Continuing Professional Development NICET –
Every 3 years you need to acquire 90 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points to keep your NICET certification active. Seventy-two of these points can come from working in the field, which leaves 18 points left to acquire. You can get the 18 points in, by taking a NICET test, being a member of a organization like NFPA (you will get 1 CPD per year you are a member), or by being an officer in any of these organizations will get you even more points. The most common way is via classroom time, each hour in the classroom will get you one CPD.
What additional education you choice is up to you, but it must meet NICET Policy #30. (Additional Education – as efforts undertaken to advance, broaden, and enhance the certificant’s technical knowledge and job skills.) If you are level 4 and take a basic fire class it may not count.
One College Credits or one College Credit Hours is equal to about 14-16 hours in the classroom and 14-16 hours studying. NICET will give you 15 CPD point per college credit. One typical college course is worth 3 college credits, which will give you 45 CPD points.
One Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is equal to 10 hours of classroom time, so 1 CEU is equal to 10 CPD points.
One hour of Training via your company or a vendor is equal to one CPD, 8 hour day in training and you have 8 CPD.
Getting your CPD points via an online web company can be done, These companies need to decide the amount of time a course will take to complete. CEU or CPD will be received when the course is completed.
According to one online company you keep track of your time spent studying for a course and log it, I think what they are saying is each hour you study equals one CPD, I don’t think that will fly, but what do I know.
NICET makes getting the 90 CPD point as easy as they can, if you spend half your time in the field working on fire alarm stuff and do 1 day of training a year, you got it covered.

NICET re-certification 90 CPD
Re: NICET re-certification 90 CPD
I am just starting to re-certify and am looking at what additional CPD points I can get. I was licensed this last year in Ohio, Does that count for certification and how many points, in which category?
I am also assuming that each required customer training course I ran, normally at government facilities, allows 1 hour per hour of training, does each hour of prep also apply, or is that a grey area?
I am asking because I am now self employed as a subcontractor to SimplexGrinnell doing large specialty projects and integrations.

I just became NICET 1 certified in January of 2016. I know I'm planning early but if I get NICET 2 within 3 years that covers my requirements right?
