RJ12 -> DB9F -> USB - is this possible?

Site has a RJ-12 -> DB9F adapter (740-1023) w/Windows XP, and am attempting to switch this to a USB port on the same machine by using a DB9F -> USB adapter.
Adapter I'm using is a RS422/RS485 USB to Serial cable adapter http://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/ ... n~ICUSB422
and although I'm receiving signal up to 99% (after changing some settings), it is not 100% and the connection is not successful. I've played around with several of the advanced timing settings on the USB Serial Comm port in device manager, but am essentially shooting in the dark.
Any ideas of the exact configuration for a USB Serial communications port (according to Kantech's direct USB 485 adapter it just works w/no advanced configuration) or if this adapter on top of adapter setup is even possible?
