ONYXWorks - Echelon, Wire type to use
These spec are for a LonWorks network which is the communications protocol that is used
The Free Topology (FT) is LonWorks term

Bus Topology
A bus topology refers to a network where the cable is run as a single long bus with short (less than 3m or 9.8ft) stubs. To utilize the full length potential of the bus topology, two network terminators are required, one for each end of the bus.
Cable Type.......AWG................................. Maximum Bus Length
Category 5.......Ethernet cable 24 AWG......... 900m (2950ft)
Belden 85102....16 AWG............................. 2700m (8860ft)
Belden 8471......16 AWG............................. 2700m (8860ft)
Level IV...........22 AWG............................. 1400m (4590ft)
Free Topology
Free topology refers to a network where the cable is not run as a single long bus. This could include a star, loop, or mixed topologies, or even a bus without double termination.
Echelon suggests one terminator for free topology networks, although this generally isn't necessary for very small networks.
Cable Type.........AWG.........Maximum Node-to-Node Distance........Maximum Total Wire Length
Cat5.................24 AWG..... 250m............................................450m
Belden 85102......16 AWG..... 500m............................................500m
Belden 8471........16 AWG..... 400m............................................500m
Level IV..............22 AWG.....400m.............................................500m
